“Auld Lang Syne” (The Good Old Days) is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song.
Auld Lang Syne is a song traditionally sung at midnight when horns are blown, confetti is thrown, and a general party atmosphere is created to ring in the New Year with happiness and hope for a bright and prosperous year.
Robert Burns forwarded a copy of the original song to the Scots Musical Museum with the remark, “The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man’s singing, is enough to recommend any air.”
Perhaps it is not too much to say that “Auld Lang Syne” is the best known and most widely diffused song in the civilised world. The use of the sacred song “Old Hundred” is limited by differences of sect, and that of the National Anthem “God save the Queen” is confined to subjects of the British Empire.
